Various feelings and questions about Coach Tressel these days: "How could he?", "Can you believe it?" "Another Christian leader giving the faith a black eye?" "Did you here about this?" "Did you here about that?"
My question is: Will you pray for him? Coach did wrong no question about it but he could use our prayers. Before you begin yelling "crucify him, crucify him!", make sure we look at it from a Biblical lens. I know some of you are all ready thinking: "but he...."
"Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I (Jesus) have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” 33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
The Ohio State situation did not surprise God at all like Peter's decision to deny Christ did not surprise Jesus. However, Jesus prayed for Peter before he denied him and in the same verse encouraged Peter to strengthen his brothers after he denied him. Basically Jesus was saying: I am praying for you, you will betray me but use it as an opportunity to grow and then be a blessing to others. Did not make what Peter did right but Jesus loved him through it like He is walking with Coach Tressel.
I am not "the judge" but there seems to be enough fruit to show Coach Tressel loves and follows Jesus. After Monday, there is enough fruit to prove he is a broken leader like all of us and the Apostle Peter who went on to be a "rock" Jesus could build upon. We should be slow to point a finger at another broken man without examining our own lives first. His sin, circumstances and platform just happen to be different than ours. "John 8:7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”
May we follow Jesus example and pray for Coach Tressel and his family. Before we set the vacant red sweater vest aflame, may we also consider processing through our own garbage identifying our own brokenness and receiving the available grace Christ offers us. "2 Cor 12: 9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."
May our brokenness lead to blessing!
Make it a great night!
Coach C
