"I Am The Greatest"

The famous words of Ali, "I Am The Greatest". Scottie Pipen, teammate of Michael Jordan, was just quoted saying "Lebron (pictured) could become the greatest basketball player of all time." Athletes, leaders and Coaches are persistently in the pursuit of athletic perfection and being the best. Fans spend tons of energy and time following sports and many in extended conversations arguing who is the best.

Jesus had a different perspective: "Matt 18:1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

God may very well bless athletes and Coaches with a platform but He is calling us to utilize those platforms with humility (not weakness) and for His glory not ours. "1 Cor 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." Ministry leaders are not exempt (maybe it was only me). I spent much of the early years in ministry pursuing statistics in an unhealthy way.

I enjoyed the story about Drew Brees leading the Saints in workouts during the NFL lockout and at the same time raising 40k for charity by involving fans in the workouts. Seems to me he understands having the lowly position of a child and whatever he does for the glory of God.

Athletics provide a great platform for character development. But as Kevin Touhey would say, "The mistake in sport is we focus on what we play for and not who we are becoming." In the pursuit of being the greatest in whatever role we have in life may we pursue it whole heartedly, with humility (not weakness) and for His glory.

Make it a great day!
