Laugh, Think, Cry

Sports like life is full of valleys and mountain tops. Saturday our team finished our season in third place with a 61-44 victory. Greater than the victory was the presence of God in our locker room when dad's encouraged their sons for one hour after the game. Tears were shed and hugs were given as dad after dad spoke from their hearts to bless their sons and the players whose dads were not there. Michael Jordan shared his title with his dad one year (pictured).

Sports can be wasted today if minimized to pursue performance and victories while missing out on the journey and growing character. Heightened sensitivity to my own battle to father well and leading of the Holy Spirit on the bus ride to our game created a moment that glorified God and will not be soon forgotten by anyone.

As we go along the journey in sport and family we have to be intentional to create memories and Spirit filled moments. Coach Jimmy Valvano said " Number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special."

When is the last time your team laughed, cried and thought together in the same day? "Matt 7:18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them."

Leaders lets throw the rotten fruit out of our locker rooms and homes and grow good fruit. What fruit are you recognized by? Creating a sense of family in sport is good fruit, fruit that will last. We understand not every situation will be easy to invite dads into a locker room, it could be a major risk but if we persist in loving our players and their parents we are closer than we think. 1 Cor 13:8 "love never fails". Loved players play harder!

Make it a great night!
