Changing Uniforms

Carmello Anthony just became a New York Knick and therefore becoming the newest professional athlete with a new uniform. I remember growing up idolizing professional athletes that tended to be more loyal to their teams. Even when the 76ers picked up "Doc" and Bobby Jones, they remained 76ers for a long time. Mike Schmidt held the hot corner for 17 years of Philly fans booing him when he did not homer.

As followers of Christ, we can put different jerseys on. We can put on a uniform of God's Love, and we can overlook the truth of God's Word that says, "2 Timothy 4:1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom". Yes He is love but He is also the judge.

We can justify sinful behavior by wearing uniforms of forgiveness, and grace. For years, I had forgiveness across my chest but my life of drunkenness, selfishness, drug use and idolatry were far from the uniform Jesus purchased for me. We often have blind spots that we need to work through but claiming to know Christ and knowingly choosing to live disobedient lives because "God loves us" is not a team we should seek to sign a contract with. Our righteousness is filthy rags.

It is good to wrestle with truth but we must eventually arrive at the accuracy of God's Word and not what our intellect and experience tells us. God's Word is truth not our intellect and experiences. Good church attending people will go to hell, scary but true. Did He die so we can do whatever we want? We can wear a uniform of "Good Works" across our chest but may be on our way to the place of weeping and gnashing of teeth.

So as we wait to see what happens with the recent NBA trade, let us take a look at the uniform we are wearing. "Romans 13:14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature." As we grow in our faith journey our uniforms can be tailored day by day through the reading of God's Word through the Holy Spirit and through discipleship relationships but the front of our jersey should bear the name above all names.

Make it a great day!

the analogies and the real message
behind it all. In the battle of
Living for Jesus vs. Living for
Satan....my goal is to not only
wear the uniform of my Lord Jesus
Christ, but live according to the
rules he has given us. God help
us all to do so. scjwdavis@gmail.com
