Self Sufficient

"Mark 1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed."

At this point of the day, many leaders have decided to operate in the own strength. We are so busy that we often do not have personal time for God. We are created in image of God but we struggle for time with Him. God is always working but so are we.

Leaders often find tension between producing and surrender. What if we came to an understanding that our production/performance was contigent upon our surrender?

Two spiritual landmarks in my life are a Leadership Conference where Gordon Mac Donald stated that the most effective leaders in history spent intentional morning time with God. At the time I said, God I will give you 15 minutes per day. Imagine that God gives me 24 hours and I was willing to give him 15 minutes. My 15 minutes grew to 45-90 minutes everyday. God changed me radically as a corporate leader and through the grace of God my professional results improved substantially.

I wish I could tell you that I continued with consistency in a Mark 1:35 lifestyle. As I have led in a ministry capacity, I was deceived into believing that I could operate without significant quiet time. Many mornings equated to 15 minutes. I was certainly giving my ministry my best effort but I was not giving God my best.

The second landmark came a few weeks ago when I visited two of my mentors in York PA. The result of those ongoing meetings has been a growing quiet time with God and a significant work in my heart. God has revealed so many blind spots (too many to mention here). Through the grace of God my family and ministry is experiencing victories through prayer and increasing intentional time.

One definition for "busy" is foolishly and intrusively active. I pray we would find our stride in the spiritual discipline of intentional quiet time with God. "Good leader" or "great leader" is a choice. Greatness will never be achieved without a surrendered life.

Make it a great day!
